Peas work well in root trainers. The main problem, in my experience, is when you come to plant them out. Pea stems are delicate and seem to be particularly prone to bending at or near the base, especially if you've started your plants off early and their quite tall by the time of planting out. In some instances the stems break, or translocation is affected, checking the plants' growth. If you're growing tall peas this problem may be worse. Maybe I'm just clumsy.....

Peas have caused me problems in the past, mostly rot and squirrels. Last year I sowed in peat pots this year I am trying rootrainers. I like to give them a head start in my climate. I go the potting soil route a month in advance of planting in the coldframe.

The parafilm seems to have been effective--one of the pieces has budded through the tape now, and the other two are swollen under it and appear alive. I was hoping for at least one to take, but I'll be very happy with the three! This was my first time grafting, and I'm hoping to have many more experiments with it.

I know folks who've done a lot of citrus grafting around here. Next time I see one of the local experts, I'll ask for some of their tricks. If they've got anything worth sharing, I'll send it your way.

The rootstock that you have looks really interesting--what did you say it was again, flying dragon? I've heard of folks making marmalade from the fruit of citrus trifoliate, and I'm certain the flowers smell good, so you may have some great benefits, even without a graft that takes. But of course, I hope that you're able to make the magic happen.

I'd thought about trying to grow them this way, but did not do it. We have peas that have been in the ground two weeks and one week, no sign yet.

Excellent Patrick! This is so timely for me as well. I received a call from a friend yesterday asking me to locate some local honey for one of her children who is suffering from allergies. She said she is starting to look more towards God's health care solutions rather than man's. I think she will benefit from seeing this video.

I really appreciate you. Thanks.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

I would say there's not a lot of hard science behind your assertion that reducing salt and sugar intake is related to health, at least as it relates to fresh and unprocessed foods, and I simply disagree with you.

What you say about oils also describes the difference between processed and unprocessed foods. The oils people normally use in their kitchens to prepare food don't contain trans-fats, and I disagree with you again that anyone who eats relatively unprocessed fats produced in a natural way needs to concern themselves with the composition of what they eat.

You seem to have overlooked the fact that "the average person" is, in the USA, very unhealthy and should reduce their sugar and salt intake.

Fats/Oils is a far more complex issue as they can have very different effects depending on their chain length, configuration and level of hydrogenation, therefore is is dangerous to make simplistic statements about them, one what or the other except to say that all trans-fats are, without doubt, dangerous.

I don't think he was advocating a complete removal of things like sugar and salt from children's diet. If you've seen any of his cookery programmes, you'll know just how much salt he splashes around in his recipes! However, I think he is working with communities where industrially processed foods have become the unhealthy norm.

BTW, your information about sugar alternatives was very interesting.

Good stuff! Linked to this from my blog. http://growyourownfood.blogspot.com/2010/03/seed-savers-network-2010.html

The cute photo is from a seed saving project I did in the local school with 7/8/9 year olds- we saved seeds, tested them and packaged them up as a fund raiser - they really enjoyed it. Seeds really resonate with children - both stuffed with potential.
