Brussels Action 17-18 April 2011 — The Seed Swap

Various organizations across Europe organized and participated in a mass seed swap, demonstration and other activities.  I was there, and this is the first in a series of posts on the event.  I posted about this before, and the official website of the event is here.

I hosted a table at the seed swap together with the Danish Seed Savers.  In the picture below is Søren of In the Toad’s Garden on the left, Lila Towle head of the Danish Seed Savers on the right, and me in the middle.

Neil Munro of the UK Heritage Seed Library was there together with
Maria Scholten, a freelance researcher working with the Scottish Crofting
Federation
:

Not to be outdone of course was Kokopelli of France and Belgium:

Tom Wagner’s potatoes were prominently featured.  Those below were offered by Lieven of De Lusthof.

there were bags:

spuds:

seeds in little compartments:

seeds on the cob and in the pumpkin:

heads of grain:

seeds in test tubes and jars:

seeds laid out nicely on the table:

and more bags of seeds:

and much more…

  1. Hey that looked like a lot of fun! Thanks for the photo’s Pat! Isn’t it something to get seed just by striping it from a grain head or from a cob!

Seriously wish there was something like that going on here locally!

*picks up rocks and clacks them together*

    =:-D

  2. Wow! That’s exciting, seeing all those seeds displayed like that. Hope you picked up lots of cool stuff to grow.

  3. It was a fantastic seed swap! I certainly brought back as many seeds as I could ever hope to fit into my garden…

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many varieties all in one place before. It was also an absolute zoo! It was totally packed with everyone ranging from young beginners to older experienced farmers. It was really lots of fun to see people so excited about seeds.

  4. It was a paradise for seedy people like us!
I’ve never been involved in this amount of seed sharing before.
Thanks for some great days Patrick.

  5. Thanks for coming Søren, and making the long trip from Denmark! Several people came up to me and said how happy they were, that all of you came from Denmark and that Neil came from the UK.
